Area summary
BA6 covers Glastonbury and surrounding villages in Mendip District (Somerset). Glastonbury is a small town with significant heritage and tourist economy, dominated by the Grade I-listed ruins of Glastonbury Abbey, the Glastonbury Tor (a Scheduled Ancient Monument managed by the National Trust) and St John the Baptist's parish church. The town has a designated conservation area covering the central streets. The Glastonbury Festival site is at Worthy Farm, Pilton, just outside the outcode in adjacent BA4.
Housing is mixed: older town-centre terraces and cottages, Victorian and Edwardian villas on the periphery, and newer estate development. The town is at the edge of the Somerset Levels and flooding has been a serious historical issue in parts of the surrounding area.
There is no rail station in BA6. Castle Cary (BA7) is the closest mainline. The A39 Bristol-Bridgwater road runs through the town. Employment patterns include retail, tourism, alternative therapies and small industrial estates. Many residents commute into Bath, Bristol and Taunton.
Schools are Somerset County Council maintained provision. Demographics skew older with a distinct alternative-lifestyle population around Glastonbury town centre.
Mendip District operates only mandatory HMO licensing. The Renters' Rights Act 2026 has abolished Section 21 evictions. The proposed 2030 EPC C standard, if enacted, will be a substantial cost on older town-centre stock.
