How UK council tax works
Council tax is the main tax used to fund local government in the UK. Each property is placed in a band based on its 1991 valuation (2003 in Wales). A is the lowest-value band, H is the highest (Wales adds a band I). The amount you pay each year is the authority's Band D rate multiplied by a band-specific ratio.
Rates vary widely across the UK. The cheapest council in England (Westminster) charges around £1,000 for Band D, while the most expensive (typically Nottingham, Rutland, or Lewes) charge over £2,500. Always check both your specific band and your specific authority's rate when budgeting for a property purchase.
