BA7 covers Castle Cary and surrounding villages in South Somerset District Council (now Somerset Council). Castle Cary has a small historic market town centre with a conservation area covering the central streets. Housing is mixed: older listed and unlisted terraces in the town centre, Victorian villas on the periphery, and newer estate development from the 1980s onwards.

Castle Cary station sits on the Great Western line and provides services to London Paddington in around 100 minutes and Bristol Temple Meads in around 60 minutes. The station also handles the major Glastonbury Festival passenger flows during the festival season. The A371 and A359 provide road links.

Employment patterns include commuting into Bath, Bristol, Yeovil and (less commonly) London, with some local employment in agriculture and small industrial estates. Demographics skew older with a meaningful retired population.
