The typical property in BD1

BD1 is Bradford city centre, with the Grade II*-listed City Hall, the Mirror Pool and the Broadway Shopping Centre.

Area summary

BD1 covers central Bradford, including the Centenary Square area with City Hall, the Mirror Pool, Bradford Cathedral and the Broadway Shopping Centre (opened 2015). Housing in central Bradford is limited and dominated by converted mill apartments and purpose-built new-build flats from the early 2000s onwards. The Forster Square station regeneration area and the Little Germany conservation area sit within or adjacent to the outcode.

Bradford Forster Square station provides services to Leeds (around 20 minutes), Skipton and Ilkley on the Airedale Line. Bradford Interchange station, immediately south in BD5, provides services to Halifax, Manchester and London Kings Cross (via Leeds). The two stations are not connected by rail and the proposed through-station has been a long-running planning issue. The Bradford City Park Mirror Pool opened in 2012 as part of the city centre regeneration.

Employment is concentrated in retail, professional services, the council, the University of Bradford (in adjacent BD7) and the National Science and Media Museum. Demographics skew towards a younger working-age population with significant ethnic diversity.

Bradford City Council operates additional HMO licensing in defined areas including parts of the city centre. The Renters' Rights Act 2026 has abolished Section 21 evictions. The proposed 2030 EPC C standard, if enacted, will be a substantial cost on the older converted mill stock.
