How to Check Crime Rates by Postcode in the UK

Every month, Police UK publishes street-level crime data covering England, Wales, and Northern Ireland. This data is free, public, and searchable by postcode — yet most property buyers never check it before making an offer.

Where does the data come from?

Police UK aggregates data from 43 police forces across England and Wales and the Police Service of Northern Ireland. Each crime is categorised and mapped to an approximate location (usually the nearest road or landmark) to protect victim anonymity. The data is typically published with a two-month lag.

What crime categories are reported?

The data breaks crime into 14 categories. Not all crimes carry the same weight when assessing an area for a property purchase:

Higher concern for homebuyers

  • Burglary — directly affects your home security
  • Vehicle crime — matters if you rely on street parking
  • Violent and sexual offences — indicates personal safety risk
  • Robbery — street-level theft involving force or threats

Lower concern (but still worth noting)

  • Anti-social behaviour — the most commonly reported category; ranges from noise complaints to public disturbances
  • Shoplifting — tends to cluster around high streets, not residential areas
  • Drugs — often reflects proactive policing rather than actual prevalence
  • Public order — arguments, fights, and disorderly behaviour

How to read the numbers

Raw crime counts can be misleading. A busy city-centre postcode will naturally have more reported crime than a quiet village — but that does not necessarily make it more dangerous per resident. When comparing areas, consider:

  • Crime rate per 1,000 residents — this normalises for population density
  • Trends over 12 months — is crime rising, falling, or stable?
  • Crime mix — an area with high shoplifting but low burglary is very different from the reverse
  • Comparison to borough or city average — how does this specific postcode compare to the wider area?

What the outcomes tell you

Police UK also reports the outcome of each crime. Common outcomes include "investigation complete, no suspect identified" (the most frequent), "unable to prosecute suspect", and "local resolution". A high proportion of unresolved crimes is normal — it reflects the reality of policing, not a failing of the local area.

How crime affects property value

Research consistently shows that crime rates influence house prices. Areas with above-average burglary or violent crime tend to see lower demand and softer prices. Conversely, a demonstrable improvement in crime statistics can boost values — particularly in up-and-coming areas where safety perceptions are shifting.

How to check crime for any postcode

You can search Police UK directly at police.uk, but the interface can be clunky and the data is presented as raw maps. Our free crime checker gives you a cleaner summary with category breakdowns and month-on-month trends for any UK postcode.
